Course descriptions can be found by visiting the Urban Curriculum webpage or by reviewing the Curriculum Guide (note: the webpages are current, and the Curriculum Guide will be updated with 2026-27 offerings in the coming weeks; not all courses listed in the 2026-27 Guide will be offered — however, required 9th grade courses will remain the same). If you're thinking about joining Urban's music program, please watch this brief video from Performing Arts Department Chair Scott Foster. IMPORTANT: Students wishing to join the Chamber Orchestra, the Lab Jazz band, or the Urban Singers (chorus) MUST choose the associated intro art course as their 9th grade art elective class, which will take place in the fall term. WORLD LANGUAGES (two terms)

All students at Urban are required to complete three years of the SAME language for graduation.

We conduct world languages placement tests in order to assess the appropriate world language level for new students. Students starting a NEW language or opting to take a level 1 language will not need to take a placement test.

Have you ever spoken the language you wish to take at Urban (in a classroom, outside of the classroom, at home, conversationally, etc.)?required

Please choose the world language level you believe is most suitable.

(This should be for the language you wish you to take at Urban).

Choose one onlyrequired

Since your response indicates that you are new to the language, you will not need to take a world language placement test and you will be automatically enrolled in level 1 of your language of choice.

Do you have a laptop?required
Do you currently receive extended time on tests, as part of a learning accommodation, IEP, or 504 plan?required

The world languages placement test is 60–90 minutes, is administered on a computer, and contains speaking, listening, reading, and writing sections.

Note: If you are taking both the World Languages and math placement tests, please pay close attention to the timeslots you choose to ensure they do not overlap. If you currently receive extended time on tests at school as part of an IEP, 504 plan, or learning plan, please also schedule your tests with a time gap between them.

You will be redirected to another website to schedule your placement test. Please don't forget to complete your course signups on this page after you have scheduled your placement test.

If you are not able to make any of the placement times please contact placements@urbanschool.org as soon as possible.
MATH (two terms)

All students at Urban are required to complete three years of math for graduation. In order to place you in the appropriate math class, incoming students that have taken any algebra should take a math placement test.

You will begin this section by choosing the math level you believe is most suitable.

Choose one onlyrequired
Next, tell us about your math experience so we can determine if you should take a math placement test. What math are you taking now?required

Since you selected: Algebra, Geometry, Not Sure, or Other, you will need to take a placement test.

Please schedule your math placement test below.

The math placement test is a 60 minute written test. If, after reviewing your test, the teacher is still unclear which Urban math placement is best for you, a math teacher will meet with you at a later date. This will allow the teacher to get more clarity on your mathematical thinking and determine the best placement for you.

Note: if you are taking both the Math and World Languages placement tests, please pay close attention to the timeslots you choose to ensure they do not overlap. If you currently receive extended time on tests at school as a part of an IEP, 504 plan, or learning plan, please also schedule your tests with a time gap between them, so they do not conflict.

Do you currently receive extended time on tests, as part of a learning accommodation, IEP, or 504 plan?required

If you are not able to make any of the placement times please contact placements@urbanschool.org as soon as possible.
Since your response indicated that you are currently taking pre-algebra, you do not need to take a math placement test and will automatically be placed in Math 1.
ARTS ELECTIVE (one term)

You will take only ONE art elective (visual or performing) during your 9th grade year.

If you plan to join the Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Band, or Urban Singers you MUST choose Intro to Chamber Orchestra, Intro to Jazz Band, or Urban Singers as your art elective. In addition to the intro course, students will join their selected group for rehearsal after the first six-weeks of school during three E periods.

Please watch this video from Scott Foster, Performing Arts Department Chair and Jazz Program Director, for detailed information on how the music program works.

Will you participate in Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Band, or Urban Singers (chorus) as a 9th Grader?required
Your required art elective is Intro to Music. Please choose one:
You have chosen to take Intro to Urban Singers, which will be one of your four academic courses during fall term. You will join the Urban Singers chorus after the first six weeks of school and will rehearse during three E periods for the remainder of the school year.
You have chosen to take Intro to Chamber Orchestra, which will be one of your four academic courses
You may choose one of the following performing or visual arts courses to take during one of the three terms of your 9th grade year. This course will be one of four academic courses during the assigned term. Classes fill quickly, so please select three different options. If you plan to participate in jazz, choir or orchestra, please go back to the question above.
