Bobby, Lauren, Chris & Student Admissions Committee
The Freshman class summer read is Born a Crime, by Trevor Noah. Written by the host of the Daily Show, this book recounts Noah's life under apartheid in South Africa as the son of a white father and black mother. Urban's Librarian Sarah Levin created a guide that students should consult as they read the book. Once school begins, Freshman groups will get together to discuss the book and the reading guide questions. We suggest that you try your local public library for a copy of the book, or purchase one if you like annotating. Urban will provide a copy of Born a Crime for families receiving financial assistance. Email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will purchase a copy of the book for you and let you know when to come by campus to pick it up.
We do not require students to read other books beyond Born a Crime, but we do encourage students to READ! Here is our summer reading list for returning Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Many of these books may be interesting and engaging for new Urban students.
