January - Alum Appreciation at Urban vs Lick Games

: Alum Appreciation at Urban vs Lick Games - Be Recognized and Root for the Blues!
Where:  Salkind Center Gym
Who: All Former Urban Varsity Basketball Players
When: Friday, January 19, 2018
            Varsity Girls play at 5:30 (halftime recognition at ~6:15)
            Varsity Boys at 7 pm (halftime recognition at ~7:45)

At the halftimes of both boys' and girls' games, we have the opportunity to honor varsity basketball alums who have created Urban's basketball-rich tradition in our Salkind Center Gym. Pizza will be provided for our former players and available for purchase by fans, the jazz band will be playing and more. This is a fun event for all alums to join with family and friends as our community gathers to cheer on our student Blues and honor our former players.

January - UrbanReads - Travels with Charley

What: UrbanReads with Clarke Weatherspoon on Steinbeck's Travels with Charley
When: Sunday, January 28, 2018 from 3 - 5 pm
Where: The Salkind Center - Redwood/Sequoia
Who: Current Parents, Alum Parents and Urban Alums aged 21+ and their guests

Facilitated by Clarke Weatherspoon as the third in his Parent/Guardian Diversity Series, the next UrbanReads will explore John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley in Search of America. Steinbeck explores the US with his blue French poodle and offers a meditation on politics, place, class, race, governance, belonging and freedom. Please join us in our conversation of this short, but illuminating text. Its connections to the current political climate are many. The event will begin at 3 pm in the Salkind Center Alumni Blues lounge with wine and nibbles. UrbanReads is open to current parents, alumni parents, alums over 21 and guests.

What: Class of 1997 20-Year Reunion
When: Saturday, May 19
            3 pm: Doors Open
            3:30 pm: Classes without Quizzes* with LeRoy Votto
            4:30 - 6:30: Reception with wine and nibbles
Who: Class of '97 alums and their families
Where: Urban's Salkind Center, 1630 Oak Street between Ashbury and Masonic

*The Continuing Relevance of the Antebellum and Civil War Periods in 2018  
Topics will include: How the issue of slavery became politically paramount in the antebellum period; the critical political  importance of the 3/5 clause in the Constitution; what did the Republican Party stand for?   How Lincoln won the Republican Party nomination and then the 1860 election; why and how secession occurred;  why war happened -- and why and how it matters; Lee (and his statues) and Grant; why the Confederacy lost and the Union won; the evolution of  the emancipation decision - the freedom quest of the enslaved in the war; the central importance of Lincoln.  What was the war about  -- and what did winning mean.   AND please bring questions you would like to ask.
