Max Schoening ('05) has co-edited an oral history book, Throwing Stones at the Moon: Narratives from Colombians Displaced by Violence, published by Voice of Witness, a branch of McSweeny's.  The book is a collection of first-person narratives of Colombians who have been driven from their homes by the country's armed conflict and human rights crisis. More details about the book (including excerpts from some very impressive reviews) can be found here.

Naturalist, educator, artist and Urban alum John Muir Laws ('84) has a new book, The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds,  a full-color how-to guide to drawing birds. John's book is written to enhance the skills of serious artists and to provide help for those who insist they can't draw. Leading the reader through a series of detailed exercises, Laws delivers what he promises: ''drawing birds opens you to the beauty of the world.'' You can find more information about the book, John's work and his classes from his website

From Elizabeth Rynecki ('87): Hey fellow Urban Alums! This Facebook page is all about my great-grandfather's artwork and my efforts to find his lost, stolen, missing and looted art. Check it out, and our website ( too. There's even a documentary film project. History buffs, art lovers and those interested in Jewish culture might enjoy it.

Student News

Some of our current students are creating a photo-collage of students and teachers on Urban trips. They'd love to hear from our alums with photos or good memories from Urban trips. Please send any memories or photos to and we will pass them to the students for their project.

Thank You!

A big thank you to  Nina M. ('04), Eli W. ('08) and Ben R. '(11) for stopping by to share stories and field questions from our current jazz band students about how they can continue to pursue music in their professional and personal lives outside of the walls of Urban. Our kids gained a lot from hearing about your experiences - we hope this can be a yearly event for them!

Special Note from Urban's Alumni Council: Thank You for Your Help and Participation!

Alumni annual giving is powerful proof of a school's strength, and we are proud to share that for the past two years our participation has climbed to 10%, a new record for Urban and on par with our peer Bay Area independent high schools. A very special thanks to all our alums who have contributed to the Annual Fund or their Class Endowment Funds!

“The tradition of alumni giving is what will enable us to maintain the unique spirit of Urban and make it possible for talented and deserving students to experience an Urban education. Together, our participation makes a significant difference."  Steven Dinkelspiel ('74), Chair, Alumni Fundraising Committee

We hope you will participate this year in our efforts. To make a gift today, please click here.
