(College) Time is on Your Side
by Lauren Gersick, Associate Director of College Counseling
The turning wheel of time! For seniors, at this moment nearly all of college applications have been completed. Perhaps you have to attend to admission interviews and we certainly encourage you to take these seriously, but the big activity at present is finishing the academic work of 12th grade and waiting for college decisions. Both are tasks harder than they appear. Hold fast.
For juniors and their parents this period is a funny "off with a bang, but pace yourself" moment. Yes, students should be looking at their standardized testing plans, something we discuss in the initial junior meeting, and yes thoughtful research on initial college ideas is important. The main student job for the winter and spring of junior year is, however, being the best student possible. Papers and lab reports trump college research in their weight. There's no need for busy work here--pare down to the essential tasks.
While this is by no means a mandate to do nothing at all, it is a mandate to do what you've been doing all along -- but even better. There will be plenty of doing down the line for everyone so squirrel away some stamina, enjoy the slow build and we will tell you exactly when the gears need to shift.
