October: What's Happening in College Counseling
by Lauren Gersick, Associate Director of College Counseling
The fall college season is in full swing. Seniors are up and running, filling out the Common Application and editing essay drafts. Early Decision and Early Admission (and related variants!) teacher recommendation requests have been submitted and college lists are reaching their final or near-final iterations.
Please note that the College Counseling office will be offering UC application workshops throughout the month of October during lunch and E Periods. Students need to attend ONE of these sessions in order to fill out the UC application properly. More information and the dates of the workshops will be sent to seniors shortly.
Remember, as well, that this is the most intense period of the college application process. Take care of yourselves -- parents and students alike. Allow for moments of quiet and rest. Check personal calendars against college admission deadlines and make sure everyone is feeling paced as much as possible. If something is feeling out of whack for a student, come talk to us in the College Office!
Students should continue to attend college rep meetings at Urban, when possible and should also continue to send essay drafts to the college office for feedback. As we've mentioned, teachers are also a great resource in this area.
Sophomore and Junior families, please note the following dates:
8:30 a.m. - Saturday, October 19
Sophomores and Juniors will be administered the PSAT at Urban. Students need to arrive at Urban by 8:30 with pencils, a calculator and snack!
7 p.m. - Monday, November 4 in the Student Center
The College Counseling Office will be offering an optional evening program, Demystyfying College Admissions Testing, for sophomore and junior parents.
Be in touch with any questions you might have about anything college-related. We are here and we are eager to keep everyone moving forward,
Susan and Lauren
