September – What's Happening in College Counseling
by Susan Lee, Director of College Counseling
Every year, school starts with a bang. About a week after the first day, it seems like summer was a long, long time ago (even with three day weeks!!)
In September, seniors should have a list of colleges that needs to be trimmed, they should be familiar with the Common Application, they should be thinking about and starting to write their essays, planning fall testing, and planning to see college reps who are visiting Urban. Recently, students have been pressured to have it all done earlier and earlier. That is fine for some students to be way ahead of the game (and some are). But, it is not necessary. There is still plenty of time to work on details and make decisions. Even for early applications, they have at least six weeks before that first deadline. And, students need to allow for the inevitable growth and changing insights that happen as senior year unfolds.
We are meeting with each student individually to talk about their process, their decisions, and their planning. We will have a workshop on September 20 to provide direction on their essay writing, guide them through some of the tricky parts of the Common Application, and give them important information that they will need for the application process. Teachers, advisors, and their college counselors are eager to work with them individually so that they can put forth their best writing for those college essays. College Representatives from all over the country are flooding Urban and the Bay Area to meet the seniors and provide an opportunity for students to get to know their colleges a little bit better.
And, Senior Parents are encouraged to attend the Senior College Night on September 26.
Off we go!!
