Outdoor Trips 2016-17


September 17 Full Moon Kayak Trip
We will meet at Urban at 4:30 pm, and have an early dinner before getting on the road to Sausalito. We will be on the Bay from about 6:15 - 9:15 where we will be able to see the sunset and the moonrise (no fog please). No experience is necessary; we will have guides teach us how to kayak and how to stay safe on the water. Click here to download the information sheet and permission waiver. June 12 - 15 Ashland Rafting & Shakespeare
Join us for this combination trip of outdoor adventure and classic theatre! On this trip we will see Twelfth Night and Hamlet performed by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. You'll have the opportunity to explore the quaint town of Ashland and also tour backstage to speak with OSF actors and crew.  One day will be spent rafting class III whitewater on the Klamath River and each night we'll be camping!  Kick off your summer with this fantastic, multi-faceted journey to Oregon!
May 22 Rock Climbing Day Trip to Castle Rock
Castle Rock State Park beckons all adventurers to come climb its sandstone slopers, jugs, and huecos. These bizarre rock formations encourage the same route can be climbed in many different ways.  If you're looking to learn the ins and outs of a local crag that you can frequent with friends on the weekend, or if you're seeking to perfect your shmearing footwork technique, or if you have never climbed and want to give it a go....this trip is for you! 
May 6 - 8 Sherpa Backpacking Trip to Desolation Wilderness
The spring melt is a unique time to trek in the Sierra Nevada.  Seasonal waterfalls, vernal pools, snow melting and verdent meadows await us.  The Urban Sherpas are heading to Desolation Wilderness on a 3day backpacking trip where we will hone our cooking skills, practice our back country travel techniques and navigation, and explore to our heart's content.
April 30 Night Kayaking Tomales Bay with Bioluminescence
Sea kayaking is awesome all the time....sea kayaking at night with a high possibility of paddling through bioluminescence (light-emitting plankton!) will be magical and jaw-dropping awesome. Our trip begins at dusk and we'll learn the basics of sea kayaking while the pastel colors of the sunset surround us.  We'll spend the evening paddling around Tomales Bay observing creatures of the night awake and arise! Sign up for this rad adventure on a Saturday night!

March 4-6, 2016: Snow Camping and Snow Shoeing in Yosemite
We're going to the winter wonderland that is Yosemite! Friday night we'll camp in the valley and gaze up at the towering granite walls and waterfalls and sip hot beverages around a fire. Saturday we'll strike camp and snowshoe (wearing our backpacks) from Badger Pass out to Dewey Point (3.5 miles). That evening, we'll dig out a kitchen and camp in the snow on the south rim of the valley with spectacular views of El Capitan, Half Dome and the snow capped Sierra crest! After hiking out on Sunday morning, we'll journey back to Urban. No experience necessary, simply be ready for an adventure!

March 2-3, 2016: Evening at the Banff Mountain Film Festival
Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or an aspiring filmmaker, this festival inspires all. Expect adventure stacked, adrenaline pumping, and edge of your seat films, coupled with reflective, artful and introspective films. What IS this festival? "The Festival happens over nine days each fall and features stories of profound journeys, unexpected adventures and ground-breaking expeditions told by renowned authors, photographers, adventurers and filmmakers from around the globe. Days after the Festival our World Tour launches bringing films to fans in over 40 countries." You can choose one night or attend both. The shows will be different each night. February 5-7, 2016: Cross Country Skiing Trip to Castle Peak
Arrive at Clair Tappaan Lodge on Friday evening to sleep after a roadside dinner! Saturday morning we'll drive to Castle Peak and spend the day learning how to cross country ski in the meadow. We'll ski on easy terrain practicing our techniques and exploring the snowy basin. All experience levels welcome! Saturday evening will be warm with dinner and games.  Sunday morning, we'll pack up after a morning ski.  Then we'll head back down the hill to Urban.

January 29, 2016: Wilderness First Aid Course
Are you curious about emergency medicine or wilderness medicine? Are you outside adventuring frequently? Do you have plans to travel internationally? Will you pursue medicine for your career? This one day, full 8-hour course will be taught at Urban and will keep you riveted the entire time. It will be an action packed scenario-based course that is very hands on, intellectually stimulating, and you will receive a certification that you can use on your resume, to get a job, on your college application...etc. The cost will be covered as part of Winter Festival. Sierra Rescue teaches the course. 
January 16-17, 2016: Pie Ranch Overnight 

We'll spend the day at the Pie Ranch farm learning how to care for the various crops that are growing this time of year. We will make pies together and then at the end of the day we'll celebrate our time on the farm with a barn dance! On Sunday we will hopefully see some elephant seals across the road at Año Nuevo state park before we return to Urban. No experience necessary.
December 6, 2015: Monarch Butterfly Migration Trip to Natural Bridges State Park (canceled) 
Monarch Butterflies from all over Western North America migrate to the Monterey Bay Area of California annually...the only known butterfly species to migrate. We'll explore Natural Bridges State Park, observe the Monarchs, and check out the tide pools. Come witness this incredible local spectacle that remains fascinating year after year!

December 5, 2015: Rock Climbing Day Trip to Cosumnes River Gorge 
Join us for Urban's last rock climbing trip of 2015. Cosumnes River Gorge is a little known gem in the Sierra foothills calling all to come explore and climb! The gorge boasts granite walls with clean crack climbing and chimneys. This will be a long day trip for students of all climbing abilities (no experience necessary). We will focus on crack climbing technique and belay technique.  Rock on!
November 12, 2015: Evening at the Reel Rock Tour
Do you get psyched when you hear the words "rock climbing"? Are you passionate about this world renowned sport? Want to learn more about the adventures and breakthroughs in the rock climbing world and witness big moves on big walls? Never rock climbed before? No worries. Come see a set of awesome adventure films and walk away inspired. The Reel Rock Tour was founded in 2006 and travels worldwide.  
October 23-25, 2015: Rock Climbing Trip to Pinnacles National Park
Pinnacles National Park is one of the local Bay Area crags calling all to come explore and climb! With this being a climbing trip, enthusiasm and excitement are crucial for trying new techniques, learning skills, and challenging oneself. There is no experience necessary to participate. There will be opportunity to climb a range of routes, on which students of all skill levels can have fun and feel challenged. If you have never climbed before or if you can lead a run-out 5.11c trad route, there is a place for you on this trip.Pinnacles is a remnant of an ancient volcano and is a geologist's playground -- let's explore it from the ground up! We’ll be overnight camping, so get excited to stargaze, observe local flora and fauna (California Condors!), and practice your backcountry cooking skills. Rock on!
September 9, 2015: Stand Up Paddle Board Trip in Sausalito
We're going on a Stand Up Paddle boarding adventure in Sausalito! Look forward to a day on the water! Fog or sun we’ll test our balance and embrace the swells. We'll learn basic paddling skills and try some yoga on the water! You don’t need any prior experience to do this trip, simply a positive attitude.
August 18-19, 2015: Leadership Retreat, Backpacking in Point Reyes
Late summer at Point Reyes National Seashore beckons for backpackers to come relish the warm evenings, starry nights, foggy mornings, and bold display of the color green. On this overnight trip we will play games and dive into discussion about "how to effectively lead oneself and others" as well as "what characteristics we admire in people we recognize as leaders". We'll camp at Wildcat Campground and cook back country meals and gaze at the stars.  This trip is an awesome way to transition back to life at Urban after a summer of adventures; let's go backpacking!
