Doing well in your classes and activities, being involved with the community, and enjoying your high school years is the best preparation for college. We have put together a Planning for College by Grade timeline that might help you as you look at specifics about the college application process.  
 

The College Counselors begin meeting individually with students and parents/guardians in January of the 11th grade year. Of course the College Counselors, teachers and advisors will be providing information related to college admissions whenever it is pertinent to a student. And the College Counselors are always available for questions and concerns!

The Urban GPA (grade point average) is a cumulative GPA of all of the classes that a student takes at Urban. The University of California GPA includes only Sophomore and Junior year grades and gives extra weight to UAS honors classes. The UC GPA includes all Urban classes except Service Learning. 
 

Some colleges have an admissions process under which a student applies by an early deadline and is notified of the decision early.

Under an Early Decision program, a student makes a binding commitment to a first choice institution where, if admitted, the student is bound to enroll and must withdraw all other applications.

Early Action is an early application/notification program that is not binding; an accepted student is not committed to make a decision until the Candidates Reply Date of May 1.

Many early applications are due by November 1 and students are notified by mid December. The advantages/disadvantages of applying under an Early Admissions program vary by college and by student. Your College Counselor will discuss these options with you throughout the process.

Application deadlines vary. Early Decision and Early Action deadlines are often November 1. November 30 is the deadline for the University of California and California State University applications. The most common deadline for private colleges is January 1. No matter what the deadline is, we strongly advise students to complete all applications by the end of Winter Break.
