March 19, 2020 A MESSAGE FROM DAN Dear Alums,
Difficult and unprecedented circumstances shine a bright light on an institution's character. And I think you'd be proud of your alma mater this week -- not because it's perfect, but because it is responding to myriad challenges creatively, empathetically and thoughtfully. People who have worked here decades longer than me say this sort of resourcefulness and resilience are in the school's DNA, and both qualities are certainly in bold evidence as a talented cohort of faculty and staff navigate these uncharted waters.
Dan Miller Head of School
ANNOUNCEMENTS SCHOOL CLOSURE In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Urban campus will be closed through March 27. We will evaluate our re-opening date on an ongoing basis. We have also cancelled or postponed all non-essential gatherings and community events, including the alumni events noted below. EAST COAST REUNION CANCELLED The East Coast Alumni Reunion scheduled for Saturday, March 28, in Brooklyn, NY, has been cancelled. We were hoping to postpone to a later date this year, but given the current environment, we plan on returning next spring for our biennial visit to New York. CAREER VISIT DAYS CANCELLED Career Visit Days, scheduled for April 16-17, also have been cancelled. A huge thank you to the 50+ alums who signed up to host Juniors at their places of work. We look forward to reaching out to you in 2021! AUCTION RESCHEDULED Urban's annual fundraising event has been moved to May 29 and the online auction to May 26-June 4. Consider donating an item to our online auction! Donations are tax-deductible and businesses get nationwide exposure with others who shop on the Bidpal website. You would also be reaching Urban's parent/guardian community, which is passionate about Urban and happy to support alumni businesses.

Please enjoy Urban's 2018-19 Annual Report, featuring the many ways in which our community of alumni, parents/ guardians, grandparents and friends supported our school during the 2018-19 school year. We are enormously grateful and are filled with great pride in knowing that you believe in our work.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
We are pleased to report that 154 alums have made gifts to Urban so far this school year. We hope you will join them!
Alumni generosity and participation are deeply impactful and inspiring. Your support helps to ensure that the education you experienced at Urban continues to transform the lives of talented and deserving students each and every day and strengthen the school's foundation for years to come.
If you haven't already, we hope you will make a gift to Urban's 2019-20 Annual Fund. Urban is still a small school and each gift, regardless of size, makes a difference. We are so grateful for your support! THANK YOU, BLUES! Cybersecurity expert Eva Galperin ('96) says "full access to a person's phone is the next best thing to full access to a person's mind." In a recent TED talk, she describes the emerging danger of stalkerware, software designed to spy on someone by gaining access to their devices without their knowledge, and calls on antivirus companies to recognize this software as malicious in order to discourage abusers and protect victims.
Will Hammond ('87) is hosting a video series, Public Market Emeryville: One Bite at a Time. The Public Market is a popular international food hall in the East Bay, and Will plans to visit each of its purveyors for a meal and will report on the latest hot and delicious dishes. Plus, Will's got some surprises in store, so you'll want to follow his every move! Check out the promotional video here.
Chandler Tang ('09) recently opened Post Script, a gift shop off of Filmore. The shop includes a diverse assortment of goods across stationery, home goods and accessories. With 50 curated brands, eclectic with an underlying theme: things a little offbeat. Check out the interview with Chandler featured on The Glossary, a platform dedicated to female business owners, and follow Post Script.
Jordan Calhoun ('10) (first row, second from the left) sat on a panel with a group of African American Leaders in Aviation at Lucasfilm to discuss careers in aviation and inspire youth through Performing Stars of Marin, a non-profit helping underserved kids in Marin County. Jordan is not the first aviation enthusiast in his family--one of his relatives was a Tuskegee airman!
