To the Urban Community,
A year ago, when I accepted the position as Urban's seventh Head of School, it was an easy decision. I had long admired Urban as an institution of rare insight and imagination — a school unafraid to step beyond traditional educational habits in search of, as the website boldly declares, "a better way to educate high school students." Now, sitting at my desk in July, writing all of you in my new and official capacity, I continue to marvel at this extraordinary opportunity.
I'm sure many of you are curious, even anxious, to see how my arrival will affect Urban. Indeed, I know from experience that new Heads of School can be Rorschach tests for a school's constituencies — incitements for various fears and aspirations. I ask then, kindly, for your forbearance and trust. I am here because I already believe in the school's fundamental mission and identity. The "feel" of this place, its culture and priorities, are precious; first and foremost, I will be guided by the physician's Hippocratic oath: "do no harm." Changes at Urban will be made prudently and with the informed wisdom of this very capable school community.
That said, it is not in Urban's nature to be complacent. As you may be aware, the school developed an ambitious strategic plan in 2017, and it is my charge to create and/or sustain momentum on several institutional fronts. You can find a copy of Urban Thrives 2023 here where you'll note, among many other things, a commitment to improve faculty and staff compensation; bolster financial aid to support a diverse and talented student body; and fulfill the dream of a new Performing Arts Center. All are vital goals and an inspiration as I begin my work as part of this exceptional school.
Knowing this email is received in the heart of summer, I'll close simply with an open invitation to call or stop by with any questions or concerns. My direct line is 415 593 9501.
With warm regards and anticipation of meeting you in person,
