Reunions for Classes Ending in "9"
Last month we welcomed eight alums back to Urban to talk to graduating Seniors about life after Urban: transitions to college, pursuing and changing paths both in and out of college, and what it's like to be back to Urban. Thank you to our 2019 College Advice Panelists Simone Hudson ('12), Leon Gilligan-Steinberg ('14), Marco d'Amore ('12), Arthur Root ('16), Sabrina Werby ('12), Eli Chanoff ('13), Jenny Ware ('11) and Sean Judkins-Boeri ('11)! Interested in being a College Advice Panelist in Spring 2020? Let us know here. Thank you to all who have made a gift to this very special scholarship fund commemorating Mark Salkind's retirement after an incredible 32 years as Head of School! Our Alumni Council members are working hard to reach our ambitious goal of 200 donors by June 30, and we are over halfway there!
As alums, your support ensures that the Urban education you experienced continues to transform the lives of other talented and deserving students. If you haven't already, we hope you will make a gift today. Each gift, of any amount, makes an impact. Thank you for supporting financial aid at Urban – and for showing gratitude for all Mark has helped Urban accomplish! Please visit our giving page and consider becoming an advocate to help spread the word. NEED A GOOD SUMMER READ? Try the Fall 2019 UrbanReads book selection, The Eulogist, by Urban alum parent Terry Gamble Boyer (Chapin '10 and Anna '13). The Eulogist is set in Ohio in the decades leading up to the Civil War. It illuminates the immigrant experience, the injustice of slavery, and the debts human beings owe to one another, witnessed through the endeavors of one Irish-American family. The New York Times says "......Gamble seduces with her rich, rollicking portrait of life in Jacksonian Ohio."
Terry will be in conversation with LeRoy Votto, Urban Alumni Ambassador and former faculty member, on Sunday, October 13, at the Salkind Center, for the first in our twice-a-year UrbanReads all-community book event. Save the date, and enjoy the book!

Congratulations to Molly Fisk ('73), who won the prestigious Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship 2019! She is the author of four poetry collections and the Poet Laureate of Nevada County, CA, for the past two years. Molly plans to launch California Fire & Water, a statewide teaching, anthology and public reading project addressing the state's recent devastating fires. She is also a radio commentator for community radio and NPR. You can read more about Molly and her upcoming readings and workshops here. Listen to Matt Goldman ('10) talk baseball! According to Matt, "I started writing about baseball at a fantasy site just for fun. That ultimately turned into two paying writing jobs at MLB Daily Dish and Beyond the Box Score. After about six months of writing, I would get asked to do radio interviews from time to time, and after a while, a radio station based out of Shenandoah, IA, called KMA Land, asked me to be a recurring baseball guest every Monday. I've been doing it for two seasons now and it's always a ton of fun!" Listen here every Monday at 11:38 am CST (9:38 am PST). Come see Sarah Klein's ('86) Lost Holidays, an exhibition of animation and prints which celebrates life's flowering in the face of its passing away. Sarah's images are full of rich colors and playful patterning, yet ultimately reductive: a sustained meditation on time and change, which she emphasizes in this show through her juxtaposition of still and moving images. The exhibit runs June 22 - August 10, with an opening reception on Saturday, June 22, 6-9 pm, at Telematic, 323 10th St. at Folsom, San Francisco. Visit Telematic for more information. Bobby Chinn ('82), international chef, television presenter, restaurateur and cookbook author, was recently awarded an Honorary Degree by Richmond University in London, having made the commencement speech at the University's graduation ceremony. Bobby is a popular culinary figure throughout Asia, both for his two highly regarded restaurants in Vietnam and for the award-winning TV series World Café. He lives most of the year in Vietnam and travels throughout Asia, cooking food that has been described by the Asian Wall Street Journal as, "The best Californian cuisine outside of California." In 2013, Bobby founded a new Vietnamese restaurant, The House of Ho, in Soho, London. Since 2016 he has been a featured judge on MBC's Top Chef Middle East. Congratulations, Bobby! Maya Herbsman ('13), Associate Artistic Director and Intimacy Choreographer, was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle earlier this month. Intimacy choreography, or intimacy direction, is a new profession but a function as old as theater itself, according to Maya. Maya says she makes intimacy scenes "specific, technical, repeatable and highly choreographed." She compares her job to fight choreography, in its use of standardized practices to keep actors and everyone else in the rehearsal room safe — physically, emotionally and psychologically. Alex Drexler ('96) partnered with former Madewell and J. Crew designer, Somsack Sikhounmuong, this year to relaunch his clothing line, Alex Mill. The company opened its first store in New York this month. Find out more about Alex and Alex Mill here. If you are in New York City, go visit Alex's new store! Frank Wong's ('98) Harborview Restaurant & Bar made the list of SF's 2019 Michelin Bib Gourmand, "restaurants that serve high-quality meals, which include two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less." Founded in 2018, Harborview has gorgeous bay views and specializes in Hong Kong style Cantonese cuisine, serving traditional dim sum, as well as many specialty and seafood dishes. For more information visit: SF Eater and Harborview Restaurant. JOB ANNOUNCEMENTS
