Notes of Interest from Admissions

Financial Assistance: You are welcome to begin the financial aid application process at any time. Central to the mission of Urban School is a commitment to socio-economic diversity among our students. Urban awards financial aid based on a family's need and the availability of funds. Financial aid decisions are made independently from admissions decisions, so families should not hesitate to complete the application process if you believe that you may qualify for financial assistance. Find a detailed financial aid checklist on our school's website here.

Interviews in Progress! After submitting the Parent/Guardian Application form and the application fee (waivers available upon request), please consider scheduling an optional student interview. Interviews began mid-October and are held most Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons through January. These conversational interviews are conducted by the Admissions team and serve as an opportunity to discuss student interests and passions, as well as ask questions about Urban. Students do not need to have visited Urban prior to their interview. Interviews are offered in half-hour slots, and spaces are limited. Login to your Ravenna Hub account to make an appointment.

The application due date is approaching!

Our Admissions staff is working as quickly as possible to process all application documents. Materials submitted digitally through Ravenna will be processed more quickly than paper documents. If we are missing any components of your application, we will contact you shortly after the deadline. We will not be able to respond to inquiries asking if your application is complete. We appreciate your patience!

UrbanWatch: Climate One Founder and Urban's Academic Dean
Our recent All-Alumni Reunion in late October wasn't complete without an informative Classes Without Quizzes. Alum parent and Climate One founder Greg Dalton joined Urban Academic Dean Geoff Ruth for a conversation on climate change, including trends and takeaways around national public perceptions, environmental regulations, optimism bias, political divisions, media coverage, and how some states and other countries are implementing climate policies. Watch the entire talk here.

Service Learning Fair
Since our founding, Urban has offered an integrated four-year Service Learning curriculum in which Juniors and Seniors engage in internships and projects that align with their passions. To spark their interests, we recently hosted 20 of our 100+ partner organizations for the annual Fall Service Fair. Freshmen and Sophomores learned more about some of the organizations in our city, and Juniors and Seniors were able to meet and talk to representatives from a range of nonprofits. Service Learning at Urban aims to foster a lifelong appreciation for civic participation, multicultural education, societal awareness and community service.

Peer Education Theater
Introduced nearly 30 years ago to the curriculum, Peer Education Theater is a unique-to-Urban course in which students combine writing and performance to create a public production of personal histories, self-expression and introspective vignettes. Students shared stories of their friends, family and experiences as teens, followed by small group discussions with audience members, both peers and families.

What's It Like Being a Blue?
We introduced you to some of our Student Admissions Committee members in our last issue of BluesNotes. Visit our Being a Blue page on our website and meet three new Urban Blues, whose activities at Urban range from theater to MultiCulti leadership; from Peer Resource to soccer and lacrosse!

Blues News!

Winter athletics are in full swing at Urban! Our winter teams include four girls teams: JV and Varsity Soccer, and JV and Varsity Basketball; and five boys teams: Frosh/Sophomore, JV and Boys Basketball, and JV and Varsity Soccer. With tournaments happening this month, our Blues are staying competitive in the rankings - girls varsity soccer is now ranked 5th in San Francisco and first in our league!

Visit our athletics calendar and plan on attending an upcoming game to cheer on the Blues!
