Notes of Interest from Admissions

Financial Assistance: At the core of Urban School's mission is a commitment to socio-economic diversity among our students. Please do not hesitate to apply for financial assistance. During this 2018-19 school year, 29 percent of Urban students have received more than $3.84 million in assistance.

Interviews in Progress! Although it is not a required part of the application process, we greatly value the opportunity to speak with students individually. Following submission of the online Parent/ Guardian Form and the non-refundable $100 application fee (waivers can be obtained by calling or emailing us) in your Ravenna-Hub account, you will be able to choose a date and half-hour slot for an optional student interview through mid-January.

Parent Information Sessions: If you are interested in attending one of our Parent Information Sessions, typically held on Tuesday mornings from 9 - 10:45 am, please register on Ravenna or email us!

What's It Like Being a Blue?
There are a lot of ways to be an Urban student! For some it means serious athletic participation; for others, it includes arts or performance, student government, outdoor and global trips, or all of these combined. For all Urban students, it means a serious commitment to the school's mission of igniting a passion for learning. There is no one way to be an Urban student, but all of us are Urban Blues! Learn more here.

Urban School Diversity Night Event
Wednesday, November 7, 2018
7 - 8:30 pm

Mark Salkind Center 1639 Oak Street
Registration details available on Ravenna-Hub
At Urban, we believe the best education occurs in a school community made up of students, teachers and families drawn from many different socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, races, religions and sexual orientations. We celebrate those differences while honoring and respecting students' individuality as we learn to work together.

Parents/guardians and 8th graders are asked to join us to learn more about Urban's commitment to diversity in our curriculum, programs and student body. Participants will include students from our Multicultural Leadership Team (Multi-Culti), Students of Color Club (SOC) and Gender Sexual Orientation Alliance (GSA), as well as faculty and members of our P-IDEAS Committee (Parents for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity at School). Come learn more!

Around and Off Campus - Fall Term at Urban

Urban celebrated our annual Multicultural Festival last week! Our student-run affinity and ally clubs hosted five days of special activities and forums for members of the community. The festival was a wonderful celebration and an invitation to engage in learning about others!

Another favorite Urban tradition, Class Days, took place two weeks ago. Freshmen held advising competitions and went to Fort Miley for a day of adventure and challenge at the ropes course; Sophomores went sea kayaking and met with Urban Alumni to learn about future career options; Juniors went camping and participated in trail work at Point Reyes, after a little beach yoga of course (above); and Seniors participated in grade-level activities, a self defense class and college application preparation. It was a fantastic week of class bonding and memories!

Urban Performing Arts Roundup
Our Fall Theater Production class (did you know productions are a class at Urban?) opens the musical Chicago next week with a large cast and a live orchestra. Up next is our annual Winter Music Concert, featuring the Chamber Orchestra, Urban Singers, and the Lab and Advanced Jazz Bands on Sunday, December 16, 5 pm, at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco. If you are a musician, please join us for an evening of wonderful performances!

Blues News!

Congratulations to our girls varsity volleyball team on a great season! The team beat Mendocino High School in the first round of the North Coast Section (NCS) last Tuesday to advance to the NCS quarterfinals. This past Saturday, the Blues travelled to Bentley HS in Lafayette to take on the #4 seed, but ultimately were unable to upset the higher seed.

Girls varsity tennis begins individual league playoffs this week and winter sports begins this week as well. Boys soccer now joins girls soccer as a winter sport, along with basketball. Visit our athletics calendar and plan on attending an upcoming game to cheer on the Blues!
