Please join us for Urban's annual Winter Music Concert on Sunday, December 16. The concert begins at 5 pm and general admission is $5 at the door. Herbst Theater, 401 Van Ness Avenue, in San Francisco.
The centerpiece of Urban Chamber Orchestra's program is Camille Saint-Saens' spectacular Carnival of the Animals, featuring several soloists in colorful renditions of animals like lions, elephants and swans. Mozart's ebullient overture to The Marriage of Figaro and Ravel's sublime Pavane for a Dead Princess provide stark contrasts, and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, in conjunction with the Urban Singers, is equal parts delight and terror! Urban's Orchestra is directed by Dana Sadava
Under the direction of Brooke Steele, the Urban Singers will perform an eclectic set this term, from a contemporary rendition of the childhood story Goodnight Moon, to a rhythmic and challenging piece in Lithuanian titled Du Dob Dob. The chorus will also perform Cloudburst, an epic eight-part choral piece in Spanish with wind chimes, symbols and simulated thunder, and a beautiful piece designed for treble voices, Tundra.
Director David Boyce's Lab Band program will highlight the groove aspects of jazz, from swing to funk. Advanced Jazz Band, directed by Scott Foster, will feature music by bebop composers, Brazilian master Antonio Carlos Jobim, and modern jazz and swing classics.
Please come for a great evening with Urban's finest musicians! The student musicians and the Department kindly request that the audience stay for the entire concert.
