Congratulations to the Urban Science Teams for big wins at the BioEHSC competition earlier this month!  

Team A took first place for its presentation, Glutamatergic Depression via Microelectrode Array in Seizures. Team members include Charlotte B ('21), Emilio H ('22), Zadie W ('22) and Anna M ('22). See their presentation here.

Team B won second place in the video competition and an Honorable Mention under the Medical Engineering competition for its entry Using Urinalysis Biomarkers to Diagnose HER2+ Breast Cancer. Team members include Ava R ('22), Isa L ('23), Caroline K ('23) and Jacob S ('22). The BioEHSC competition, an annual research and design competition held for high school students interested in bioengineering and biotechnology, is hosted each year by UC Berkeley. Judges include professors, science and industry professionals and graduate students. Learn more about the science department at Urban here.

GO BLUES! 

Congratulations to Urban students Talia H, AJ and Ellie L for their awards and recognition in the 2021 Marin County Poetry Competition. These students' work was selected for publication out of more than 600 entries! 

Talia received third place for her entry, Yesterday's Red Plaid Flannel; AJ received Honorable Mention for Ode to a Box Filled With Smaller Boxes, and Ellie's poem will also be published in the anthology in the coming months.

Each year, Urban 11th graders meet with alumni from around the Bay Area to hear about their time at Urban, their college experiences, and paths to their careers. This year, the event is going virtual for the first time, allowing for alums from across the world to participate!

On April 9 and 16, 11th graders will listen in on Zoom panels featuring former Blues working in tech, business, healthcare, journalism, art, nonprofits and more. Each panel is moderated by an Urban teacher.

Congratulations to Urban English teacher and 9th Grade Dean Ricco Siasoco! Ricco was awarded Honorable Mention for Outstanding Achievement in Creative Writing: Prose from the Association for Asian American Studies for his work The Foley Artist: Stories.

The collection of nine stories explores the intersectional identities of women and men in the Filipino diaspora in America and abroad: from Des Moines to Boston, Los Angeles to Manila.

Author Grace Talusan writes that through The Foley Artist, Ricco "centers [Filipino] stories - with beautiful, powerful, and complicated characters. His writing is compassionate, generous, funny, and exuberant."
