Celebrating Mark's Retirement
As the premiere independent high school in San Francisco with a national reputation as an educational leader, it’s hard to imagine any other Urban. It’s even more interesting to imagine the Mark Salkind we know today as an incoming Urban 9th grader. He was no doubt anxious and excited, like most new Freshman are. The thing that was different about Mark’s first day at Urban is that the school was all new, too.
Urban School opened its doors in Fall 1966, and Mark was among the initial class of 22 bright, ambitious and curious students who would be the first to make their mark on what would become “our” Urban School. That was 52 years ago, and for 32 of those, Mark has been at the helm of his distinctive and innovative alma mater, helping to shape and create this very special place.
It’s now time to thank Mark for all he has done - for the school, for our community, and most importantly, for our children. Please join the entire community as we celebrate Mark Salkind and his Urban legacy!

Urban School established the Mark Salkind Scholarship Fund in 2011 to honor Mark’s 25th year as Head of School. This endowment fund supports accessibility for deserving students through financial assistance, ensuring that families with limited financial means can attend Urban now and in the future.
We are grateful that our community members may continue their generosity in commemoration of Mark’s retirement after 32 years as Head of School.
Thank you for supporting Urban students and the Mark Salkind Scholarship Fund.
