Applying to Urban Step-by-Step
Thank you for your interest in The Urban School of San Francisco. The following steps outline the procedure for applying to Urban and other information relevant to the application process.
1. Complete Online Inquiry
At the end of summer, our online inquiry will become available on our website. We only accept inquiries from 8th grade families, and ask that potential transfer students contact us by phone.
While completing the online inquiry form, please only submit your preferred email address, as we will utilize it for communication throughout the application process. After submitting the inquiry, you will receive a user name and password via email, which you will use to enter our online admissions portal and complete the online application and register for events (Open House, shadow visit, etc.).
We only accept inquiries from 8th grade families. We ask that interested transfer applicants please contact us by phone or email.
2. Register for the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test)
Urban requires all applicants for ninth grade to submit their results from the SSAT. The SSAT should be taken during eighth grade in October, November, December, or January . Scores must be sent directly from SSAT to The Urban School of San Francisco's Admissions Office. Designate Urban (school code 7861) as a score recipient on the SSAT registration form. Please visit the SSAT official website or call 609 683 4440 for more information about registration, procedures and dates.
For consistency between all ninth grade applicants, Urban strongly prefers the SSAT, however we will accept scores from the HSPT or the ISEE.
3. Schedule Events
All events are optional and can be scheduled once our online scheduling module is up on our website, usually at the end of August. Using the user name and password you received after completing the Online Inquiry, you may go to our Apply/Schedule Online page and access our online admissions portal to register for an Open House, student visit, and parent information session. See Step 4 to schedule an optional student interview. Only eighth grade families will be allowed to schedule events.
Our visit program begins in late September. We offer half-day student visits on most Monday afternoons, Tuesday mornings and afternoons, Wednesday afternoons, and Thursday mornings. Current Urban students host our visitors and bring them to one or two classes (lunch is not included).
4. Complete Parent/Guardian Form and Schedule Optional Student Interview
The optional student interview can be scheduled after submission of the online Parent/Guardian Form and the non-refundable $100 application fee (waivers available upon request). Once you have submitted these items, you may log in to our online admissions portal on our Apply/Schedule Online page and choose a date for the optional student interview. Parents may wait to complete Parent/Guardian Form's Question 3 (tell us why Urban is a good fit for your student and family) if you haven't had a chance to visit Urban and until you know more about the school.
Interviews begin in November and will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons through mid-January. These conversational interviews are conducted by the Admissions team and serve as an opportunity to discuss your interests and passions, as well as ask questions about Urban. Interviews are offered in half-hour slots, and spaces are limited.
5. Request Teacher/Principal Recommendation Forms
Have your parent/guardian complete the top of the recommendation forms and give them to your current English teacher, math teacher, and principal or counselor. You may either email your teachers the writeable PDF or download and print the Math Recommendation, English Recommendation, and Principal/Counselor Recommendation. If submitting a paper copy, provide each teacher with a stamped envelope addressed to The Urban School of San Francisco (address provided below), and ask them to postmark the recommendation by the application deadline in mid-January.
6. Request Transcript
Have your parent/guardian complete the top of the Transcript Release Form on the writeable PDF or download and print a copy, then submit it to your school's office or registrar. Official transcripts must be sent in a sealed envelope to the Urban Admissions Office by the application deadline in mid-January. Transcripts should include grades from the last two years and the first semester of the current year. The Transcript Release Form must accompany the official transcripts.
7. Complete Application
Submit the Student Application and Parent/Guardian Form (if you have not already) on our online admissions portal by the application deadline in mid-January. If you would like to complete a paper application, you may download it or contact our office. Both online and paper applications request the same information. The application will not be processed without a $100 application fee (waivers can be requested by calling our office). You can pay via credit card or check online.
