Freshman Orientation – August 24-25
Freshman orientation is scheduled for Thursday-Friday, August 24-25, 2017. These are mandatory days for incoming Class of 2021 students. Please review the letter sent recently from 9/10 Dean Riley Maddox. Please note that advisory assignments are complete; do not contact Assistant Head Charlotte Worsley. The first day of fall term is Monday, August 28.
Fall Athletic Team Tryouts Begin Monday, August 14
Fall 2017 sports will begin on August 14, with the exception of boys soccer. Soccer conditioning will be held August 14-17 and is only mandatory for varsity players. Varsity tryouts are August 18 and 21; JV boys tryouts are August 22-24. All athletes who would like to participate in a fall sport are expected to attend all days of tryouts. Check the website for more details.
Please ensure that you have submitted your “ok to play” signed physical form and from your student’s physician and the concussion acknowledgement form on or before August 14, or your student will not be allowed to tryout or play until the form is submitted.
The annual Student-Family Handbook is now available for your download and review (login required), as well as this note from Assistant Head for Student Life Charlotte Worsley, outlining Urban's expectations for being a good digital friend and citizen when using social media and other online communications platforms. These documents also can be accessed on the Parent Resources page in the Parent Portal. We ask that you read them thoroughly and share them both with your new high school student.
Student Family Online Roster
Looking to carpool or for contact information with your student’s classmates and families? The online searchable directory might help. Using the same login instructions above, click on the “Find an Urban Parent, Student or Family” link on the Parent Portal page and click on Directory. You can search by name, zip code or other personalized options. Please note that use of the Student-Family Directory is for non-commercial, school-related purposes only.

It’s not too late to sign up for the 2017-18 school year!
• Accident Insurance must be purchased before August 11 (before start of fall sports on August 14), and tuition refund must be purchased no later than Friday, August 25. Click here to review the Accident Insurance brochure, and click here to purchase the insurance online directly from the company.
• In consideration of the large financial obligation that tuition represents, Urban makes available to all families Tuition Refund Insurance, payable in the event that a student withdraws from the school. Please read the brochure concerning the plan and click here to purchase the insurance online from Urban.
Summer Student Reading Program
Urban Librarian Sarah Levin and her Library Readers have announced an exiting new summer reading program. Students choose one book from among 30 titles. Each of these titles is sponsored by Urban faculty, staff or a member of Library Leaders. You will pledge to read one of these books over the summer. In the fall once school begins, we'll convene the reading groups to have a book club-style meeting that will last about an hour. We hope this program will promote reading for fun, inter-grade camaraderie, and a chance to meet more Urban community members early in the year. Fill out this form, noting which books you'd be interested in reading. Reading groups will be limited to 16 readers, so we're asking to rank your top five book choices. Please fill out the form by May 19th. I will let you know which book you'll be reading by May 31. Students on financial aid will be mailed a copy of their assigned book by mid June.
Parent/Guardian UrbanReads Fall Event
Book groups are not just for students at Urban! Each year, in conjunction with our Alumni Relations Department, we host one or two UrbanReads events for parents, alums, alumni parents and faculty/staff. Each event features an author somehow related to Urban. This fall’s event, tentatively set for Sunday, October 1, features the Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco, by alumni parent Gary Kamiya (Celeste ’14), native San Franciscan and editor of San Francisco Magazine and former editor of Salon.com. Gary will do a reading and a Q&A; wine and snacks will be served by our host, the Urban Parent/Guardian Association (PGA). Pick up the book today and start reading!
