Friday, October 17 - All Urban Alums and Their Guests
5:30 - 6:30 pm: Classes without Quizzes with LeRoy Votto - The Passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act
On July 2 this year, we celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act that Martin Luther King called "the child of a storm." Drafted in a rush, by the Kennedy Administration and prompted (indeed prodded) by the non-violent, direct-action moral crusade of Marin Luther King and the broader Civil Rights Movement, the 1964 Civil Rights Act, as it turned out, was both about race and title II and gender in title VII. The story behind this act is fascinating, complex and compelling. Video and audio clips will supplement the presentation.
6:30 - 8:30 pm: Reception and Open House
Join Head of School Mark Salkind ('70), teachers, staff and fellow alums for a festive evening with wine and hors d'oeuvres, sparkling conversation and live music by Mean to Me (Urban alums Ben Slater '07 and Judy Butterfield '08)! All alums and their special guests are invited.
