Rationale - Why Laptops?
Vision Statement
Students use computer technology as a natural tool of the
learning process. Computers are available to all students whenever and wherever
they are needed - similar to pen and paper. The result de-emphasizes the specialization
of computer technology as use becomes seamless, ubiquitous and normal.
Philosophy
Equality of Access - All students, regardless of income or
family background, will have access to a similar, modern and functional
computer for use at both school and home.
Supports Urban's Mission
- Individual ownership will help promote concepts of self-motivation and
enthusiastic participation by providing all with access to a powerful current
tool to enhance learning.
Supports 1995 & 2001 Strategic Plans - Urban will
continue to infuse technology into its classrooms across all departments to
enhance active, student-centered learning. Our goal will be to achieve a
seamless integration of technology into the daily curriculum and through
continued experimentation, add to our growing inventory of best practices.
Fulfills 1999 Technology Plan - Plan calls for laptops for
each student to more fully integrate technology use.
Curriculum Innovation - The laptop initiative supports
Urban's tradition as an innovative leader by moving forward with an integrated
approach to technology use.
Preparation for College and Careers - Computer use is
required in nearly all university programs and professions, thus a natural and
constant access in high school will better prepare students for this inevitable
future.
Pedagogical
Improves Learning - Students will customize their computers
and install programs helpful to their own learning needs (e.g. Inspiration,
dictionaries and study aids). Individualized computers helps address diversity
of learning style issues.
Efficiency of Class Time - Homework assignments using
technology (email, Internet, specialty applications) can be given with
confidence that all students can accomplish this at home, thus maximizing
discussion and conceptual exploration during class-time.
Technology Skills - Laptop ownership will result in greater
skill, comfort and confidence using technology including keyboarding,
production applications (e.g. MS Office), Internet research and digital manipulation.
Diversity of Expression - Available technology expands
breadth of opportunities for student research, projects and communication via
increased access to technology tools.
Instructional Flexibility - Individual ownership changes
access to technology to an "as needed" basis supporting the
spontaneity of instruction common to Urban courses. Teaching plans will no
longer require working around access to carts.
Logistical,
Communication and Sharing
Increased Access - Equipment is always available whenever
needed.
Reduced Equipment Problems - Pride of ownership will lead to
more equipment care associated with greater responsibility.
Standardizes Home Access - All students will be able to access
remote files, school email and standardized school software from home thus
eliminating complex compatibility issues.
Increased Communication with Reduced Use of Paper - Archived
communications are accessible to students at all times.
Enhanced Student Organization - A student laptop combines
the need for multiple notebooks, supplies, calendars, etc. into a single tool.
Laptops may also result in weight savings by substituting some texts for online
readings (the average textbook weighs 7.5 pounds).
Increases Academic Communication - Constant access increases
the sharing of work among and between students and teachers, and extends the
reach of communication beyond the classroom.
