Urban History Chair Rebecca Shapiro Receives the Herbst Foundation 2012 Teaching Excellence Award
Posted 07/18/2012 01:41PM

Urban’s own Rebecca Shapiro, chair of the history department, has received the 2012 Teaching Excellence award from the Herbst Foundation. Bob Taylor and Shirley Costello, board members at the Foundation, presented Rebecca with her award in front of her Urban colleagues at a recent faculty meeting.

The awards are made annually to a teacher in private and parochial schools located in San Francisco that elect to participate. Each award includes a grant to the selected teacher and a general contribution to the school to be used to pursue its continuing education goals.

The award honors a teacher who reflects the following core teaching values: (1) engages students in critical and creative thinking; (2) inspires the joy of learning resulting in a break through to higher levels of academic achievement; (3) challenges and inspires students to do their best work and to achieve more than what might be expected; and (4) exhibits high personal and professional standards and professional development.

Rebecca certainly achieves all of that and more…congrats Rebecca!
