Urban Alumni East Coast Reception!

Mark Salkind (‘70), Jonathan Howland, Charlotte Worsley and Clarke Weatherspoon invite all our East Coast alums to a reception with delicious food and drinks at Amali on Saturday, March 4, from 6 - 8 pm. We hope you can join us for a festive evening with old and new Urban friends. If you haven’t already, please RSVP by February 27. This is an exciting trip for us and we look forward to seeing and connecting with our East Coast Urban Blues!

Urban at 50: Solid Gold Auction to Support Financial Aid

Save the date: Saturday, March 25, from 6:30 - 11 pm, as we celebrate our first and only auction held in the new Mark Salkind Center! The annual auction is the only fundraising event for financial aid at Urban and is a wonderful gathering of our community. Tickets are half-price for alums, and the evening will include dinner, drinks and dancing to a great live band. With our one-time venue and one-time 50th birthday, this is an event not to be missed! We are excited for our alums to join us in the festivities. Ticket are available here or email us with questions.

Alum business owners, consider donating an item to our online auction! Donations are tax-deductible and businesses get nationwide exposure with others who shop on the BiddingforGood website. You would also be reaching Urban’s parent/guardian community, which is passionate about Urban and like to support our alums. For information email us or go directly to our BiddingforGood site to make a donation

Alumni/Student Career Visit Days
Our Sophomore Career Visit Days will be held on April 6 - 7. Last year, thanks to the generosity of our alumni community, students were able to choose from myriad options and visit alums at their workplaces: local and state politics, business, technology, film, design, music, environment and sustainability, science, medicine and more. If you are available to serve as a resource to our students in this capacity or want to learn more about how to be involved please email us or fill out this form.

Thank You for Your Support!
We are pleased to report that 120 alums have made gifts to Urban this school year. Our ambitious goal is 250 alumni gifts by June 30! Will you help us get there?

Alumni gifts are meaningful and help to ensure that the education you experienced continues to transform the lives of talented and deserving students. Your support strengthens the school’s foundation for years to come.

If you haven’t already, we hope you will make a gift to 2016-17 Annual Fund or, for the Classes of 2009 - 2016, your Class Endowment Fund today. Urban is still a small school and each gift, regardless of size, makes a difference. We are so grateful for your support!

Urban Athletics
Congratulations to our Varsity girls soccer team -- this year’s BCL champions -- on their terrific season! Congratulations also to our boys and girls basketball teams for their great season and wish them the best of luck as they continue on to postseason play and the NCS playoffs. We love cheering on our hard working Blues in our new Salkind Center!

Spring sports season has now started - boys and girls lacrosse, swimming, baseball, golf, tennis, fencing, and track and field. Stay tuned or check the athletic calendar for game times and locations and go Blues!

Urban Legends!
We have added new videos to the Urban Legends section of the Urbanat50 website. Take a few moments to learn more about Wendy Parkman, performing arts teacher and architect of Urban’s wonderful circus program; Richard Lautze, math teacher, former athletics director/Blues fan, and Cal Studies/Aim High outdoor educator; and former teacher Steven Thomas, now head of the Oxbow school in Napa.

Send Us Your Class Notes!
New job? New baby? Bumped into an old friend or teacher? We love hearing from you! Email us your class notes for the February BluesNotes. Pictures welcomed and encouraged.

from the alumni council

Bobby Chinn (‘82): We love following the fascinating career of alum and celebrated chef, restaurateur and TV personality, Bobby Chinn (‘82). This piece from Oí Magazine tells the story of how and why Bobby started cooking in Vietnam.

Melissa Chou (‘00): On the subject of celebrated chefs, congratulations to James Beard Award semifinalist Melissa Chou ('00) who has been nominated for Pastry Chef of the Year for the second year in a row! While you are thinking Urban and food, check out our new poll on the Urbanat50 website!

Will Hammond (‘87): Will’s project Soul Folk is back with its fourth album, Karibou Wunderland. The 10-song set is filled with stories of love and hope. It is available now through willhammondjr.bandcamp.com with more availabilities to come. Congratulations Will!

Alexander Rose (‘90): Smithsonian.com carried this piece on the Long Now Foundation’s Rosetta Stone Project and its wearable disk. Alum Alexander Rose (‘90), Executive Director, of the Long Now Foundation first told us about this exciting project when Alum Ambassador LeRoy Votto interviewed him for a BluesNotes piece in April 2015. The disk is on our wish list!

Jaime Rosenstein ('06) is making her Broadway debut with Sunday in the Park with George with Jake Gyllenhaal in the newly renovated Hudson Theater!  Congratulations Jaime!

Aum Celia Sack ('87) and Omnivore Books, her San Francisco culinary bookstore, made the news with her beautiful display of cookbooks celebrating the countries and cuisines targeted by the recent travel ban. This SFist article includes a link to a Grubhub with more information about each of Celia's selections.
