UrbanReads at 50: Arlie Russell Hochschild in conversation with Urban Alum Ambassador LeRoy Votto
On Sunday, January 29, starting at 4 pm, we are delighted to welcome alumni parent, professor emerita of sociology at UC Berkeley and author Arlie Russell Hochschild (David ’89) back to Urban for our second UrbanReads event of this school year. Arlie’s recently published book, Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, was a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award and is a New York Times bestseller. It was also named by the Times as one of six books to read to understand Donald Trump’s presidential win. The event kicks off with wine and nibbles in the Salkind Center, after which Arlie will share stories of her five years of immersive research and why the recent election was a momentous event waiting to happen.

RSVPs are required for this event. Click here to register.

Urban coming to the Big Apple - SAVE THE DATE
Mark Salkind, Jonathan Howland, Charlotte Worsley and Clarke Weatherspoon are headed to the East Coast and would like to invite all our East Coast alums to a reception in Manhattan at a location TBA on Saturday, March 4, from 6 - 8 pm. We hope you can join us for a festive evening with old and new Urban friends. Please watch your inbox for details or email us. We are looking forward to seeing you!

Urban at 50: Solid GoldAuction to Support Financial Aid
Save the date of Saturday, March 25, from 6:30 - 11 pm, as we celebrate our first and only Auction held in the new Mark Salkind Center! The annual auction is the only fundraising event for financial aid at Urban and is a wonderful gathering of our community. Tickets are half-price for alums, and the evening will include dinner, drinks and dancing to a great live band.

Alum business owners, consider donating an item to our online auction! Donations are tax-deductible and businesses get nationwide exposure with others who shop on the biddingforgood website. You would also be reaching Urban’s parent/guardian community, which is passionate about Urban and like to support its alums. For information email us.

Month of Understanding
Alum Colin Kimzey ('13) helped us kick off the first week of Urban’s annual Month of Understanding, a chance for students to learn more from one another through a series of workshops, films and speakers. Colin spoke to students and teachers about his work as a visual artist and his journey as an Asian American campus leader at Stanford. You can see and learn about Colin’s art work here.

Also as part of this month long series, former faculty member and head of Oxbow School Stephen Thomas and alums Hung Dang (‘93), Natsumi Iimura (‘93) and Kira Zadow-Colley Greer (‘95) will be joining us to share memories and reflections about their time at Urban, their pioneering work on diversity and inclusion and the founding of our Affinity groups.

Alumni/Student Career Visit Days
Our Sophomore Career Visit Days will be held on April 6 - 7. Last year, thanks to the generosity of our alumni community, students were able to choose from myriad options to visit alums at their workplaces: local and state politics, business, technology, film, design, music, environment and sustainability, science, medicine and more. If you are available to serve as a resource to our students in this capacity or want to learn more about how to be involved please email us or fill out this form.

Thank You for Your Support!
We are pleased to report that 140 alums have made gifts to Urban this school year - a nice start toward our goal of 250 alum gifts by June 30!

Gifts to Urban make a meaningful difference in our ability to offer and sustain the range of educational opportunities that make an Urban education distinct and help to strengthen our school’s foundation for years to come, ensuring that today’s students and future generations, have continued access to excellent teaching, exciting academic and co-curricular opportunities and an inclusive community that welcomes people of all backgrounds.

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to make a gift to Urban's 2016-17 Annual Fund or your Class Endowment Fund today! Urban is still a small school and each gift, regardless of size, is meaningful.

Urban Athletics
Congratulations to our Varsity girls soccer team for its big win last week against Marin Academy!

League play began last week for our basketball programs. The next basketball home game is January 27 against Stuart Hall. Check the athletic calendar for game times and locations. If you haven’t seen a game yet in the Salkind Center, it’s time!

Urban at 50
We have added a new video to the Urban Legends section of the Urbanat50 website. Henri Picciotto began his longtime career as a math teacher at Urban in 1981 until his retirement in 2013. Watch this video to learn about Henri’s contributions!

Send Us Your Class Notes!
New job? New baby? Bumped into an old friend or teacher? We love hearing from you! Email us your class notes for the February BluesNotes. Pictures welcomed and encouraged.

from the alumni council

Erika Lenkert (‘85)’s GFF Magazine made GOOP's holiday gift guide! While the holidays may be over, GFF Magazine still makes a great gift for food lovers - gluten free or not.

Kathleen Lingo ('98): For those of you who missed hearing Kathleen speak on our 50th Anniversary panel, The Wrap carried this informative piece about the NY Times Op Docs series and Kathleen's role as its executive producer.

Sam Reider (‘07): In addition to his work with roots band Silver City Bound, Sam has been writing and developing a set of original acoustic compositions for his Future Folk Musik: Volume One project. His latest installment, The Journey, is a song about travel and motion, inspired partly by French musette and partly by the folkloric music of Argentina’s Chano Spasiuk. Sam has shows coming up in the New York area: Sunday, January 22, at Barbes in Brooklyn, and Monday, January 23, at the Lincoln Center.

Andrew St. James (‘13): Andrew’s track Making it Great Again was included on the 30 Songs in 30 Days  launched by Dave Eggers prior to this year’s presidential election. Andrew was back in San Francisco this week and is joined Travis Hayes for a show at Bimbo's 365 Club.

Max Schoening (‘05), law student and former researcher for Human Rights Watch, co-authored this OpEd published in the NY Times last week about the new Attorney General nomination.

Bobby Thornton (‘11) has a major role in the new Broadway musical A Bronx Tale. The show, as well as Bobby’s performance, received a very favorable review in the New York Times last month and the recent BroadwayBox carried this interview with him. In October, Playbill shared this fun sneak peak - check it out!

Writer and Producer Brad Wollack (‘96)’s TV series Nightcap was released in November and has been renewed for a second season. Variety writes Nightcap is lightweight, rewarding and extremely watchable comedy.” The first season, shown on Pop, just wrapped and the release date for the second season is pending.

In Memoriam: Kathryn Gilsen, our school secretary who worked at Urban from 1988 - 2003, passed away recently after a long and difficult battle with cancer. All who were at Urban during her years here will remember Kathryn fondly. She knew every student, faculty and staff member, and she extended her warmth, support, and encouragement to all. Kathryn made the time to come to see us last summer to share her memories of her time at Urban as part of our 50th Anniversary reflectionsWe will miss her.
