On Sunday, January 10, from 4 - 6 pm, alumni parents are invited to join current parents and alums for an evening of true crime, history and wine. In her new book Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession, and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California (click here for details), Urban alum Frances Dinkelspiel (’77) explores the dark side of California wine. Tangled Vines has been getting wonderful reviews and is a NY Times best seller. Frances will be discussing her book in conversation with current Urban parent and author Julia Flynn Siler. Julia is the author of another great wine story, The House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty. The UrbanReads event starts with a reception in the Gumption courtyard with wine and nibbles followed by what promises to be a fascinating discussion in the theater. To RSVP, click here. We hope to see you!
| | | Construction on the new Academic and Athletics Center began in earnest this past June. Since then, we moved an entire house 80 feet east, removed 15,000 tons of dirt, laid the foundation for a 64,000 square foot building and poured the concrete flooring for two levels of parking. It's all UP from here! Kudos to Plant Construction and its subcontractors who are working rain or shine to get the new facility built by Fall 2016.
We are so grateful to the 620+ donors who made this once-in-a-lifetime building project possible, and look forward to inviting everyone back to campus in the spring for hardhat tours and ultimately the building opening next fall.
To learn more about our progress and the North Campus expansion, please visit urbanblueprint.org where you will find a link to the webcam to watch construction in real time.
| | | Announcing the Alumni Blues Lounge!
In June of this year, we announced that a small group of Urban alums had pooled together a $200,000 challenge grant to encourage another $50,000 from alums in support of the Academic and Athletics Center by September 30. If alums rasied a total of $50,000, the upper student commons area in the new building would be named the Alumni Blues Lounge.
We are thrilled to share that over 320 alums stepped up in support of this unprecedented effort and raised a total of $294,500! The Alumni Blues Lounge is now official, and we look forward to unveiling a special donor wall recognizing all of our alumni supporters. If you would like your child(ren) to be included on the alumni donor wall, please click here to make a gift in their name/s.

Urban in the National Spotlight
The Urban School made the front page of the New York Times in the online edition on October 14, as well as the front page print edition the next day featuring our work in educating kids around the Yes Means Yes law. In addition, the Today Show came to Urban to film Shafia Zaloom, our Sophomore health teacher and developer of a companion curriculum for the documentary The Hunting Ground, and seven of our Sophomores and Juniors. They shot 90 minutes of footage and distilled it down to just a minute or so, but Urban, our students and Shafia are featured -- and they are incredibly articulate and thoughtful. Affirmative consent is a national topic of conversation, particularly with new laws in California and New York. We are proud that Urban continues to be a pioneer in teaching our students these important and valuable skills. New York Times Today Show KALW Radio Show | To be Urban is to be unfinished. To be Urban is to be in a state of steady and stimulating expansion and growth - all the livelong day, indeed all the livelong life.
