A Farewell to Urban Faculty and Staff!
Congratulations to Suzanne Forrest, our Assistant Head for Academics on her much-deserved retirement! In addition to Suzanne, there are a number of changes in our line-up for next year. Tilda Kapuya, English teacher since 1999, has accepted a position as Director of Multicultural Education at University High School and we will say goodbye to others this year as well. To read about all of this year's staff changes please click here for a letter from Head of School Mark Salkind ('70). If you would like to wish a teacher or staff member well, please email us and we will be sure to share!
Class Notes
Click here to see this edition's Class Notes. The password is June2014. We love hearing what you are up to! Thank you for sharing your news with us. If you have a note you would like to share with our alumni community in the fall please email us.
The Summer Reading List is Available
The summer reading list includes suggested titles recommended by Urban faculty and staff. The books are available in bookstores and in local libraries. This summer's all-school read is City of Thieves. Here in Urban's Alumni Office we'll be tackling several of these reads over the summer—we hope you will too!
Announcing Bay Area BlendEd
Urban has partnered with the Athenian School, The College Preparatory School, Lick-Wilmerding High School and Marin Academy to form the Bay Area BlendEd Consortium. The five schools will offer 10 courses combining face-to-face and online instruction beginning in Fall 2014. The BlendEd Consortium seeks to combine demonstrated best practices for online learning with our schools' proven strengths in direct classroom instruction. By creating a blended model, where students access the curriculum and teachers online, as well as through regular class meetings, we help our students prepare for the changing methods of instruction and communication they will see in college and in the workforce while preserving the core relational culture that lies at the heart of our schools' educational missions. BlendEd courses combine demonstrated best practices for online learning with face-to-face instruction, while taking advantage of the geography, talent and culture of the Bay Area. Urban will offer two of the courses next year: Climate Change: Scientific Principles, Impacts, and Human Responses with Geoff Ruth, and Multivariable Calculus with Riley Maddox.
from the alumni council
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our recent Southern California reunion. It was wonderful to connect with you. We hope you enjoy the photos here.

As we near the end of this school year, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all our alumni donors who enable current and future generations to benefit from Urban's mission to "ignite a passion for learning."

To date, 164 alums have supported Urban toward our goal of 220+ donors by June 30. Just 56 more alumni donors needed! If you have not yet made a gift we hope you will consider making one today!

To make a gift to the 2013-14 Annual Fund please click here. For alums in the Classes of 2009 - 2013, click here to make or renew a gift to your Class Endowment Fund.

Alumni contributions go a long way here at Urban and your dollars, no matter the amount, can make a big difference to students and teachers at our school today and for years to come. Thank you!

We are excited to share that Urban alumna Katie Bentivoglio ('09) accepted a Junior Fellowship position at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C. Katie started at UC Berkeley, transfered to Columbia and majored in political science and Middle Eastern, South Asian and African studies.

This past year she worked in the Presidential Internship Program at the American University in Cairo. Katie reached out to Urban last month to thank her teachers for preparing her to be a critical thinker and to pursue new areas of study. A quote from Columbia history professor Bob Neer, who taught Katie in Contemporary Civilization, said, "she was a very opinionated but respectful student." This definitley sounds like an Urban-trained student! To read more about Katie's new position, please read the article in Columbia University's newspaper. Congratulations Katie!
